Laws to eliminate criminals from politics
Currently, in India, a number of individuals with criminal antecedents are given tickets to contest elections. In 2004, about 20% of those who were elected to Parliament had criminal cases filed against them. This problem is prevalent across most political parties. This tears into the moral fabric of the country and has an impact on governance. The new Government should make it a top priority to pass laws to eliminate existing criminals and prevent new ones from entering into politics.

Curb corruption at all levels
It's no surprise that India is one of the corruption capitals of the world. Corruption continues to happen at all levels - from a clerk to Ministers in the Government - and, alarmingly, has obtained a level of acceptance such that it's not considered a taboo anymore. The biggest impact of corruption is to the middle-to-low class families who cannot afford to bribe their way through Government employees at public offices.

No child left behind
Every child in India should be provided with basic education. This is the biggest investment we can make as a nation.

Strong and transparent law enforcement department
Law enforcement agency is like a basic infrastructure. It has to be corruption - free, dependable, powerful and yet transparent and answers to the judicial system. If we strengthen this department every other thing will fall in place. The country is long way to go not because of lack of initiatives but because of unable to carry an initiative through due to *lost* resources in the government process.

Improve education standards at public/corporation schools
The corporation and public schools in India are riddled with inefficiencies leading to sub-standard education standards. Some top issues include lack of quality teachers, lack of resources and metrics to measure performance of the schools.

Enforce Government transparency at all levels
Make the work and performance of MPs and MLAs transparent by creating laws and regulations that would bring more information online and available to the public in a timely manner.

Revamp National Security
The recent Mumbai attacks showcase a glaring hole in the national security apparatus. Given the instability of the surrounding countries - including, Pakistan, Srilanka, Bangladesh, ... - it's important that India prioritizes national security.

Citizen Accountability
We need better social accountability. We need to stop cribbing about the system and start being the system. People destroying and damaging public property, loitering the streets, peeing on sidewalks -- all of this needs to be taken to task. We need to take more pride and responsibility in being "Indian" and not just be happy with being the inventors of "zero"!

Leaner and faster Judicial system
There are record number of cases pending in the various courts within the Indian Judicial system. The frustrating slowness with which justice get meted out to criminals, leads to loss of faith in the system. Not to mention, sometimes this leads to people taking law into their own hands and thereby becoming criminals themselves.
